I'd attribute the ire that mark generates to it's middle-of-the-road nature.
Either you punctuation do yes or you punctuation do no. Wax on, Wax off, man.

It's funny. When someone makes a mistake like that (er, present company excluded...)I'm like "oh, get an education much?" But when I write, for example, "hear" instead of "here," it's merely synapses cross-firing in whatever part of the brain handles homonyms.
What part of the brain handles the apostrophe?
Nice to have a laugh at oneself now and again.
